Frequently Asked Questions
When it is small and always needed — an icon, a logo, a gradient. Inlining saves a request. Beyond roughly 5 KB the size penalty and the loss of separate caching usually outweigh that.
Base64 represents three bytes as four characters, so it is always about 33% larger. That is inherent to the encoding.
Yes, though for SVG a URL-encoded data URI is usually smaller than Base64. Both work everywhere.
